When it comes to audio performance, initially, the cable was paired with the Softears Tremolo model (more details on that to follow). However, in practical use, it was discovered to be more compatible with the previously crafted 5-unit custom RSV. The setup includes the DX240+DC04pro as the front end (to provide high resolution output for Arc) and the Beam 4 (further details on this later), employing Tidal and Roon for media streaming as well as accessing a personal music library.
As this is a discussion concerning upgraded cables, it is crucial to first elucidate the original cable's sound profile: The RSV cable presents a relatively neutral sound. In contrast to its predecessor, the RS10, the soundstage of the RSV is more restrained, lacking the same directness in expression. It leans toward suitability for pop music, although the vocals still tend to carry a drier tone. Among the three frequency ranges, the sub-bass exhibits a slight limitation in extension. After the replacement with Epoch, the overall sound has undergone a noticeable tightening, resulting in a more cohesive and robust imaging. I was pleasantly surprised by the newfound cleanliness and transparency in the sound output. The previous concern regarding sub-bass extension, likely influenced by the drivers, seems less prominent now, as the cleaner and more coherent sound presentation has enhanced the low-frequency elasticity. In comparison to the original cable, the sub-bass issue is now less conspicuous. The sound alterations induced by switching to Epoch in the RSV setup can be summarized as improved fine detailing. While the overall sound has tightened, there is a slight reduction in dynamics. To address this, I recommend compensating by increasing the gain by one level. On the whole, there have been several positive sonic changes, which have allowed me to appreciate and overlook the thick and rigid nature of the cable.
Furthermore, I explored the compatibility with other CM 2-pin connectors: After a month of use with the Tremolo and some burn-in, the overall sound lost some of its initial tautness. However, upon switching to Epoch, while enhancing the texture of each component, it simultaneously tightened the sound. This shift solidified my belief that RSV pairs more favorably with Epoch. Regarding the black and yellow insert, known for its challenging nature for cable pairing, it demonstrated limited compatibility with Epoch. The soundstage predominantly expanded horizontally with noticeable vertical compression. The original and LTD cables proved to be better-suited alternatives. Transitioning from the NF AUDIO NF3, my first custom cable known for its conservative nature, to Epoch resulted in slightly distant vocals but overall exhibited high compatibility.
